How to Stay Sane While You’re On Bed Rest

Experiencing a high-risk pregnancy can be stressful and worrisome. But although the term “high risk” may sound scary, it’s just a way for your doctor to ensure you’re getting the extra attention you need to detect and address any problems early on.  A high-risk pregnancy often entails bed rest, which is essential in making sure you and your baby stay healthy. Unfortunately, being confined to one place and having to rely on others is no fun. Here’s how to make your time on bed rest a little less fearful and a lot less boring.

Get Support
It’s important to find people you trust to share your fear and anxiety with. Your partner, friends and family are great outlets during this time. Look to them for a listening ear and words of comfort when you feel like you need it.

Start “Nesting”
Consider what you’ll need for the first three months after your baby is born and stock up. Signing up for gift registries and ordering products online (even diapers) are good things to do before the chaos of having a newborn begins.

Read
Now’s the time to dive into those books you’ve been meaning to crack for some time now. After all, you won’t have much time for reading after your baby is born, so why not take advantage of this time to read now?

Have “You” Time
This may seem silly, since all you’ll be having is “you” time while on bed rest, but this is a great opportunity to pamper yourself. Get a pedicure or manicure from a professional who makes house calls, or see if your stylist can come to you for a cut and color.

Prepare for More Doctor Visits
Going to the doctor when you’re pregnant is essential, and when your pregnancy is higher risk, those visits will be more frequent. Accept the inevitability of more doctor visits and the stresses that come with it, and remember that these visits are only temporary.

Connect With Your Doctor
Perhaps now more than ever, you’re going to need a doctor you can connect with and feel safe with. Make sure your doctor is someone who is willing to take the time necessary to listen to your concerns without feeling rushed. Having a trusted medical professional that can be your health advocate during this tumultuous time can make all the difference.
