The thyroid is a gland in your neck that secretes hormones to help cells and tissues function throughout the body. When your thyroid isn’t working right, it can result in health disorders. If the glad is overactive and produces excessive hormones, it’s called hyperthyroidism. Conversely, when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones, it’s considered hypothyroidism. Women over 35 years of age are most at risk for thyroid disorders. Here’s how to tell if your thyroid may not be working right:

  1. You’re tired all the time. Exhaustion and fatigue can happen when your thyroid isn’t secreting enough hormones, slowing down cells and muscles. If you’re still tired after getting a full night’s sleep, your thyroid may be underactive.
  2. You feel anxious. When your thyroid produces too much hormone, it can cause you to feel jittery and unable to relax
  3. Your appetite is different. An overabundance of thyroid hormone can make you feel hungry all the time. An underactive thyroid, on the other hand, can alter your sense of taste and smell. It also causes you to gain weight even if you’re eating right and exercising.
  4. Your bowels are unpredictable. Thyroid disorders lead to digestive problems like diarrhea and constipation.
  5. Your heart feels fluttery. This could mean you’re having heart palpitations. If you feel like your heart is skipping a beat, or if it’s pounding or beating too quickly, you could have hyperthyroidism.
  6. You can’t concentrate. Hyperthyroidism can make it difficult to stay focused, while hyperthyroidism may cause forgetfulness.
  7. You’re losing your hair. If your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormone, it can disrupt your hair growth cycle, causing dry brittle hair that breaks or falls out. When your thyroid produces too much hormone, you may experience thinning hair.
  8. You’re either freezing or sweating. Hypothyroidism brings on the feeling being cold and having chills because your underactive thyroid produces less energy, which means less heat in your body. An overactive thyroid, on the other hand, can put your cells into overdrive and cause you to feel too hot or to sweat excessively.

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to get your thyroid checked. For more information on Thyroid issues, or to schedule an appointment, please complete our online form or call 817.346.5336.
